  • USA Cycling Will Not Approve Split Day Sanctioning in 2017

An Open Letter to the SacCX Community

    Dear SacCXers,

Last year we announced the Sacramento Cyclocross series would offer "split days" of both grassroots and USA Cycling sanctioned racing. As we explained at the time:

"SacCX has long been a grassroots series that encourages newcomers to come give it a try and discover what the sport has to offer... yet the greater Sacramento area is also home to many exceptionally gifted cyclocross racers who pour their hearts, souls, time, energy and talents into competing on the state, national, and even the international CX stage."

We worked hard to create a schedule that accommodated both types of racers as National Championships in Reno approached, and considered the 2016 season a success:

    • It was the first time we had a presenting sponsor: amain.com
    • We had over 3,000 registered racers throughout the eight race series
    • 52.4% of those racers chose the "grassroots" morning races
    • 47.6% of those racers chose afternoon USA Cycling sanctioned races
    • We streamlined registration to comply with all USA Cycling requirements while remaining fast and flexible with race credit check-in

Sadly we had to pay over $6,000 to USA Cycling for insurance coverage that was redundant to what we already had, but it was a sacrifice we were willing to make to help our CX community have a strong, successful showing at National Championships in January 2018.

Unfortunately, USA Cycling has indicated they will not approve a "split day" permit for the upcoming 2017 season.

We were informed that we can either sanction the entire day through USA Cycling... or they will refuse to work with us at all. As much as we want support our racers who will be competitive at National Championships in Reno, we cannot afford to

    • Pay $12,000+ for insurance we don’t need
    • Spend $2,000+ for USA Cycling officials to rubber-stamp the quality results we already provide
    • Alienate half our racers who don't want to pay $70 additional for an annual USA Cycling license
    • Add paperwork and a $10 one-day license fee to new racers who just want to give cyclocross a try

We have asked what specific concerns USA Cycling has so that we can address them. Other than being told that last year was a special test case, and in general it’s against their rules, they have not offered a path forward to compromise.

We are discouraged and frustrated about their lack of understanding to the realities we face. And honestly, we’re confused why they feel they have the power to dictate what we can and can’t do outside of USA Cycling permitted events! But given they will not approve a race flier similar to last year we have no choice but to move forward without their involvement.

We wanted to present this to our CX community to let you know where things stand. As always, we welcome your suggestions and feedback.

    Best,

    Clint and Jennifer Claassen

  • An Open Letter to the SacCX Community

    June 1, 2016

    Dear SacCXers,

For the past two years, it's been our privilege to coordinate the Sacramento Cyclocross series. It's been an insane amount of work but it's been more than worth it as we personally meet more and more racers, and hear positive feedback about the roll SacCX plays in people's lives.

And during this time, we've come to understand that we serve an incredibly diverse group of athletes.

SacCX has long been a grassroots series that encourages newcomers to come give it a try and discover what the sport has to offer. We love hearing stories about people who stumbled upon our weekend mayhem... and were instantly hooked. This series is not only a place to race bikes, challenge ourselves, and grab celery handups... but a place to gather together and have fun with an amazing community of people.

The greater Sacramento area is also home to many exceptionally gifted cyclocross racers who pour their hearts, souls, time, energy and talents into competing on the state, national, and even the international CX stage. We are humbled and grateful when they choose to race SacCX and we want to do all we can to support their cycling careers.

As many of you know, Cyclocross National Championships will be coming to Reno in January 2018 and this is the first time in 16 years that it will be near Sacramento. SacCXers are being presented with a unique opportunity to make a strong showing on the National stage, right here in our own backyard. In order to compete at this level, our local racers need races that are sanctioned through USA Cycling, thus providing them upgrade points... and eventually, callup points.

These two racer profiles are about as opposite as it gets yet we feel it's important that we support both types. To this effort, we're excited to announce that all eight Sacramento Cyclocross races in 2016 will offer "split days" of both grassroots and USA Cycling sanctioned racing.

On Monday, June 6th, we will begin releasing the dates and locations of the 2016 season. Each weekday, from Monday, June 6th until Wednesday, June 15th, go to the Sacramento Cyclocross Facebook page at 9:00 am. We'll post the date of the next race, and a picture of the venue. Everyone who correctly guesses where the race venue will automatically be entered to win a free race entry to that race. The location and the winner will be revealed each afternoon at 3:00 pm. If you don't feel like checking social media each day, hang tight and we'll email the final race schedule everyone on Wednesday, June 15th.

We always welcome new ideas and constructive feedback, so please don't ever hesitate to contact us with your thoughts. Many thanks to everyone who comes out and makes cyclocross such a unique, fun sport... we can't wait to see you in the Fall!

  • NCNCA District Championship is approved

It's official! Race 6 at Lange Twins will also be the Northern California Nevada Cycling Association (NCNCA) District CHAMPIONSHIP! We had many requested to permit the entire series through USAC so people could earn points towards nationals. We had many other requests to keep the series "grassroots" and remain independent of USAC. So now we have the best of both worlds! More information is on the race page, and we have to give a big thanks to Kinetic Cycles for helping us pull this off.

  • Race 5 is on Sunday

  • Race 5 Permit is Approved

We just met with the City of Sacramento, and they gave us the thumbs-up for Race 5 at Miller Park!
